An eyewitness said construction workers were on the roof when it collapsed around midday, and those below it ran for their lives. The witness described the roof as collapsing "like a house of cards."The cause of the collapse was not immediately known.

FC Twente director Jan van Halst said the club “is terribly upset. Our sympathy goes to the victims.”

He appealed to supporters of the team not to visit the stadium while emergency services were still at work.
