We'll see if this works.

Hey now, everyone is entitled to a sabbatical. I wish. A small conversation in IPLE pretty much summed up my life (wording may not be exact):

Mr. Brodman: I hope you all enjoyed this little break from IPLE you had.
Jason: It wasn't really much of a break.
Rich: I can't remember the last time we had a break. What was that like 3 months ago?

I wish I could say that I haven't been blogging because I was too busy being awesome, or even if just because I've been a neglectful, lazy bum (may still be some truth to that), but it's honestly just because I haven't had the time. If I get more than 6 hours of sleep on any given day, then yes, I've been neglectful, but when I'm only getting 3, 4 hours of sleep a day...I'm sure none of you would have had the time to read my entries in any case, so no hard feelings right? :]

What does it say about me that I'm actually jealous of this girl?
1. She has the luxury of sitting down to breakfast
2. That slice of bread looks mad comfy
3. She's sleeping

As it's still January, I think I'll just pick up where I left off and try to finish off my 2010 Blog Brainstorm List. However, I think I'll just have to concede to the fact that I have way too many items on the list. I'm going to add a poll (or two) in the sidebar and I'll put up my ideas five (or ten) at a time, exactly the way that they appear on my list and in the same order, and hopefully you guys will vote, and then I'll write posts on the most popular entries.
We'll see if this works.

Mamma Mia!

Rich's blog on cultural differences has inspired me to write my own take on the subject. After all, this is astoldbyannabanana :P

We may all look different, but in the end we are all just the same. I mean, even our first words are similar, and that universal word unifies us for life.

Most of you have probably played a Mario game at some point or other. Then, I'm certain that you are quite familiar with the plumber's catchphrase: "Mamma mia!" ( <- sound clip in case you didn't have a childhood).

*side note: I've always found this video amazingly cool, so check it out!

It also happens to be the name of a highly popular play, movie, etc. However, though it is a common saying, it is rarely given much attention.

What does it mean? Well, though I'm no expert in Italian, I can guess that it means something along the lines of "mother of mine". If you think about it, different variations of "my mother" can be found in almost every language except for English, which prefers to use "my God." In Chinese, it is very common to hear "wo de ma ya" or "我的妈呀," which literally translates to "my mom" to express upset or surprise! ( <- funny song :] ). It's kind of interesting to think, that regardless of race, we all revert to that security blanket of Mummy!!!

I brought up this subject at Aparna's graduation party last year, and it turns out that this phrase is in fact used in Hindi, Russian, and Tagalog (?). I don't know many other languages, so I'm just making a broad assumption, so if you can validate my claim in any other language, I'd love to hear it!

If you're going to get knocked up, use the good stuff!

As the title may suggest, my blog is ordinary. I can't write everyday as that would probably bore my audience to death. Instead, I've resolved to only blog when I have something remotely interesting (and not mean) to say. p.s. my entire right leg and foot is asleep at the moment. It's really annoying and kind of painful but not really?

I'd first like to mention that I have removed captcha from the comments at the suggestion of Rich. I didn't know I could remove that, so sorry for not doing that before. Hopefully commenting will be less of a hassle now.

I spent most of my day chilling with Staci (in spite of impending college deadlines). We went to rent movies at Redbox where on display on the poster next to the box was the movie The Human Centipede. When I got home, I was on youtube and one of the featured videos was the trailer so I clicked on it. If you are a gentle soul, do NOT watch the trailer! Let me just say, I have never seen anything in my entire life that has made me more uncomfortable. I couldn't even finish watching it.  This movie (of at the very least the trailer) is demented, sick, and disturbing; I can't imagine anybody enjoying it.

Anyhow, back to my day with Staci. We ending up opting to watch The Joneses, which believe me was much more enjoyable than any movie involving centipedes, human or not. For those that haven't heard of it, the premise of the movie is that there's a fake family, the Joneses, that poses as the perfect family in order to sell products. They push products such as cars, furniture, perfume, etc. It wasn't until the very end that Staci and I noticed that the movie was in fact pushing products to the viewer. We had just been talking about what a turn off it is when you see something in a movie and know some company paid big bucks to have it featured (ex. Kellogg's cereal on the table, etc). Well, the irony is that while the movie is saying how false item advertising is bad, the producers are doing that very thing through the movie. There were many moments during the movie in which I thought to myself wow, I wish I had that, or wouldn't it be great to have that job? The movie doesn't sugar coat with false brands and labels like Snapshot (aka Facebook), but rather advertise real company names like Dell, Audi, etc. If you've seen the movie or plan to, just think about it; it's really irony at its finest :P

Because we're bums and broke, we went to the dollar store today (where I got an amazing new lint roller!). I bought a few things (if you think you're going to go into a dollar store and save, you are sorely mistaken), but what I found most interesting was the medical section:

On sale were ovulation predictors?!?! Oh, and just in case the $1 ovulation test was faulty, you can pick up a pregnancy test to check out if you're preggers. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't trust a $1 pregnancy test. My personal opinion:
If you're going to get knocked up, use the good stuff!

I hope they get here soon...

I'm probably going to get bored of blogging soon, so while it's all fine and new, I'll just write a few extra to compensate for those dry spells when I won't write for weeks like my friends Rich and Indraneel (I don't get his latest post though, is that the phone in school? I heard it ring once and it was epic).

I'm eating as I write. Doesn't my lunch look mad asian?

Screw facebook for saying I'm 0% asian! I eat rice! (albeit with a spoon. where are my chopsticks???)

Yesterday I killed my last contacts. The obvious solution would be to just wear my glasses, but you see, I was wearing my contacts as a replacement for my glasses, so that's not going to work out. I've had contacts since 8th grade, but I only started wearing them lately for the following reasons:

1. I'm mad scared of getting those nose and ear prints and I was starting to get paranoid that I was getting them
2. It's annoying putting sunglasses on top of glasses, so I usually just wear contacts during the summer
3. I have three pairs of glasses. One cheap pair from Sam's Club that are from 8th grade and defunct. The other I chipped the second week after getting them (the water drop everyone kept pointing out). I wore them for over a year without getting them fixed but they're officially broken now. The third pair was put through not only the washer but the the dryer as well...Needless to say, it didn't survive.

As I am desperate for vision, I decided to salvage the only functioning pair, the one that only needs a cosmetic makeover.

I'm coloring in the missing paint with black sharpie. But, don't fear people because I am getting new glasses soon (maybe next weekend?) For my birthday this year, I have requested that my parents get me glasses :)

What kind of glasses do you suggest? It's actually kind of a big deal. Though we don't often notice it, glasses really say something about you. Should I go for a smart look, or maybe a fobby look, or a preppy look...I'll probably just pick the ones I find prettiest. If you have any suggestions, I'm all eyes!

In the meantime, I ordered a case of new contacts last weekend. For obvious reasons,
I hope they get here soon...
